Chicago police were investigating after an officer and suspect were shot following a "crash-and-grab" attempt at a luxury store in the city's Gold Coast neighborhood early Monday.
The incident began shortly after 4 a.m. as officers were responding to a burglary call at the Prada store, at 30 E. Oak Street, Police Supt. Larry Snelling said during a press conference Monday.
When officers arrived on the scene, they encountered a suspect armed with a handgun.

"The officers attempted to deescalate by telling him to drop the gun," Snelling said. "He did not. Shortly thereafter, there was an exchange of gunfire," Snelling said, as the suspect fled on foot.
According to Snelling, one of the officers, 55, was struck in the leg, and was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect was also struck, Snelling said, and was also transported to a nearby hospital where he is currently undergoing surgery.
"There were several individuals involved in this burglary, and several several vehicles involved," Snelling said, adding that the suspects had attempted to drive one of the vehicles, an SUV, into the Prada storefront.
Video and photos from the scene showed a dark-colored SUV smashed into the entrance of the Gold Coast Prada store, with shattered glass on the the sidewalk.
Several streets in the area were closed during rush hour as part of the investigation, including Rush Street between Walton and Oak, and State Street between Walton and Oak, NBC 5's Lisa Chavarria reported.
According to officials the Civilian Office of Police Accountability is also investigating the incident.
No further details were immediately available.
