‘My heart hurts so bad:' Family mourns security guard shot and killed at Austin business https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/my-heart-hurts-so-bad-family-mourns-security-guard-shot-and-killed-at-austin-dollar-store/3364701/ 3364701 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2024/02/Large-security-guard-shot-and-killed-austin02-23-2024-22-01-47.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A family was left heartbroken after a gunman shot and killed a father of four who was working as a security guard at a dollar store in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, according to relatives and police.

At around 1:38 p.m., police were called to Family Dollar, 5410 W. Chicago Ave., where a man had been shot. According to authorities, a 43-year-old man was approached by a suspect who opened fire. The victim, identified by family as Loyce Wright, was struck multiple times and later died at the hospital.

Shanice Wright, one of Loyce Wright’s daughters, said he was the greatest father, adding that her heart hurts so bad.

“…He never let us forget how much he loved us, and I love my father immensely, and I wish there were tighter gun laws so tragic things like this won’t continue to happen,” she told NBC Chicago in a text.

Jeremy Richardson, a childhood friend of Loyce Wright’s, said he couldn’t believe what happened.

“…And I’m holding back my tears right now. I need to see this for my own eyes,” Richardson said. “He was a good friend, lift weights, cheerful, love his kids, love his family. I cannot imagine something like this.”

Richardson urges whoever shot and killed his friend to come forward, and he’s confident they will get caught.

“When the streets talk, they gonna talk and this person ain’t gonna hide forever. You just murdered a good friend of everybodys,” he said. “This is so sad, you have to come to a Family Dollar just to shoot. For what?”

NBC Chicago spoke to several nearby employees and frequent customers who shared in their grief.

Family Dollar issued the following statement Saturday afternoon:

We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred at one of our Family Dollar stores in Chicago on Friday. We are cooperating with local authorities as they investigate the crime. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, no further comment will be offered at this time.”

As of late Friday, no arrests had been made.

The shooting remained under investigation by detectives.

String of North Side robberies prompts CPD to issue community warning https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/string-of-north-side-robberies-prompts-cpd-to-issue-community-warning/3360738/ 3360738 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2019/09/chicago-police-1.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Police are increasing their presence in some North Side neighborhoods Monday night after a string of robberies that they believe are connected, according to Ald. Andre Vasquez (40th).

In an email to residents, Vasquez said the 20th Police District — which covers Lincoln Square and Edgewater — will have additional officers from CPD’s Priority Response Team on Monday night and encouraged residents to keep an eye out for Kia and Hyundai vehicles, which have been used in the robberies.

Five robberies occurred between 6 p.m. Sunday and midnight, stretching between West Ridge, Edgewater and North Center.

The string of robberies started in the 6200 block of North Leavitt Street about 6:14 p.m. when a 26-year-old man was approached by five people who exited a silver sedan and took things from him after a “physical altercation,” police said.

Fifteen minutes later, in the 1500 block of West Ardmore Avenue, three people approached a 33-year-old woman and demanded her property before taking it and fleeing the scene, police said.

Around 7:18 p.m., three men exited a sedan and approached two other men — 21 and 22 — before one of the men hit the two victims with an object, police said. Both victims refused medical attention at the scene.

Ten minutes after that, a 15-year-old boy was in the 5500 block of North Rockwell Avenue when two people exited a dark sedan and took his property after a “physical altercation,” police said. The boy was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital; his condition was unknown.

Several hours later, about 11:40 p.m., an 18-year-old man was in the 300 block of West Peterson Avenue when a black sedan hit him and one of the two occupants displayed a gun, police said. The man was able to flee the scene, and no injuries were reported.

No arrests were made in connection with any of the robberies.

“Neighbors are encouraged to be on alert for suspiciously approaching Kias and Hyundais, which are more susceptible to theft due to vehicle software vulnerabilities,” Vasquez wrote in the email. “These stolen vehicles are then often used to commit additional crimes. The 40th Ward will continue to share alerts as we receive them from CPD.”

Chicago firefighter charged in shooting of driver in road rage incident released on electronic monitoring https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/chicago-firefighter-charged-in-shooting-of-driver-in-road-rage-incident-released-on-electronic-monitoring/3317550/ 3317550 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2024/01/foster-and-paulina.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A Cook County judge ordered a Chicago firefighter facing felony charges, including attempted murder, in connection with an off-duty road rage shooting last weekend released on electronic monitoring.

Judge Susana Ortiz said that although she didn’t believe there was a legally justifiable reason for Omotayo Kassim to shoot a man with whom he was involved in a minor traffic accident, she said she believed it was “an isolated incident” and monitoring was enough to ensure his return to court and the protection of the community.

Ortiz said Kassim would also be required to surrender any firearms in his possession to police, could not drive and would be largely restricted to his home as the case continues.

Kassim, 34, was driving to get food about 8 p.m. Sunday in a Chevrolet Tahoe when both he and the 35-year-old driver of a Jeep disobeyed stop signs at a four-way intersection near the 5200 block of North Clark Street, Cook County prosecutors said in court Wednesday.

Kassim’s SUV struck the Jeep, but its driver did not stop and instead drove off, prosecutors said. A dash-mounted camera in Kassim’s SUV and multiple surveillance cameras then captured a six-minute chase as the firefighter pursued the Jeep on Foster Avenue.

Kassim allegedly struck the Jeep from behind with his SUV several times. The Jeep crashed into parked cars in the 1600 block of West Foster Avenue in Andersonville, according to a police report.

Kassim got out of the Tahoe brandishing a gun, and moments later fired a shot that struck the Jeep driver in his jaw, prosecutors said.

“Judge, this happened incredibly, incredibly fast,” Assistant State’s Attorney Anne McCord Rodgers said.

After firing once, the gun jammed, a police report said.

At a nearby church, Philip Fahey, 63, and a friend were preparing for an event and said they saw what happened.

“Don’t move or I’ll shoot,” the firefighter yelled, according to Fahey.

“We heard a pop,” Fahey told the Sun-Times. “The guy in the Tahoe realizes he left his truck in gear, and it was rolling down the street.”

“I thought [the pop] was part of the car accident,” Fahey said. “When he said he got shot and there was a shooting, I realized it was actually a gunshot.”

A cab driver in the area called 911, and Kassim began arguing with the Jeep’s passenger, a 34-year-old West Ridge man who stepped out with his hands up, according to police.

They argued until paramedics arrived, according to Fahey. The passenger declined to comment when reached by the Sun-Times.

“It just seems kind of unreasonable that this guy got shot for a traffic altercation,” Fahey said.assim was arrested at the scene and charged Tuesday with aggravated battery with a firearm, attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

The Jeep driver was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition. Prosecutors said the bullet that struck his jaw remained lodged in his spine.

Kassim’s attorney, David McDermott, disputed the prosecutor’s characterization of the events, claiming that the Jeep driver had been drinking and “violently” struck Kassim’s SUV before fleeing the scene.

McDermott said Kassim was trying to protect the community by going after the Jeep driver and that his client fired because the Jeep driver reached for Kassim’s gun.

Ortiz said she believed the firefighter had put the public in significant danger by driving recklessly in pursuit of the Jeep and firing the gun on the street. The judge also noted Kassim would have received training specifically about road rage incidents in order to receive his concealed carry permit and should have known better.

“You call the police and you report it,” Ortiz said.

Kassim, employed by the Chicago Fire Department since 2019, was removed from duty pending the results of the investigation, fire spokesperson Larry Langford said.

In August 2015, a warrant was issued for Kassim’s arrest after he left Colorado while facing charges of trespassing a vehicle with intent to commit a crime, but the case was dropped a month later, court documents showed.

The victim’s father told the Sun-Times that his son was still sedated and intubated Tuesday afternoon.

“All of our family, we’re just praying,” said the victim’s father, who didn’t want to be named. “We’re stunned by this, especially, I mean, the way it happened.”

The man’s father saw his son Sunday morning, hours before he was shot.

“He said, ‘I love you guys’ like he always does and just left,” he said.

He described his son as someone who is “a very loving person and is always happy.

“He makes you smile no matter what.”

Chicago rideshare driver shot, critically hurt in attempted carjacking as police issue warning https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/chicago-rideshare-driver-shot-critically-hurt-in-attempted-carjacking-as-police-issue-warning/3317516/ 3317516 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2024/01/carjacking.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A rideshare driver was shot and critically injured during an attempted carjacking Wednesday in the city’s Austin neighborhood, Chicago police said.

The driver, a 51-year-old man, was dropping off a fare at approximately 10:10 p.m. in the 900 block of North LeClaire Avenue when three males approached him, authorities said.

They men took the driver’s cellphone and told him to get out of the vehicle, police said. When the driver refused, one of the men fired shots, striking the driver in the chest, police added.

According to officials, the victim was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. No one was in custody.

The shooting comes after a similar incident last week in the same neighborhood, when a Lyft driver was shot and killed after dropping passengers off.

Family members said Arocha Duque, 34, a Lyft driver, was dropping two passengers off at 8:45 p.m. last Tuesday on Thomas Street and Cicero Avenue.

According to Chicago police, officers responded to the 4800 block of West Thomas, where a car had struck two parked vehicles. When they arrived found a woman, later identified as Duque, sitting in the driver’s seat. She had been shot in the head and was pronounced dead on the scene, authorities said.

“Our hearts are with Ms. Arocha-Duque’s loved ones as they confront this unspeakable tragedy,” Lyft said in a statement. “We have reached out to her family to offer our support and are in contact with law enforcement to assist with their investigation.”

According to a community alert issued by police on Friday, at least seven rideshare drivers were robbed in the month of December. In several incidents, the victims were hit in the head with a gun. It wasn’t immediately clear if any of the incidents are connected.

The 11-year-old waved down officers about 1:30 p.m. in the 4800 block of West Jackson Boulevard. He told them he had been left alone with other children in a house on the block. When they went to the address officers found a 1-year-old boy, a 4-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy, according to police.

The relation between the children and Bishop-Smith is not clear. They were taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park as a precaution when officers were unable to find a guardian, police said.

CPD to release 2023 crime report as initial numbers show increase in robberies https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/cpd-to-release-2023-crime-report-as-initial-numbers-show-increase-in-robberies-decrease-in-shootings/3315362/ 3315362 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2023/12/chicago-police.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The Chicago Police Department on Tuesday is expected to release a comprehensive report detailing year-end crime statistics for city of Chicago, with preliminary numbers showing a more than 20% increase of robberies from 2022 to 2023.

Citing initial data, 11,025 robberies were reported in 2023, compared to 8,965 in 2022, making for a 23% increase, CPD said. Robbery arrests were also up, CPD said, from 891 in 2022 compared to 1,075 in 2023.

Preliminary data reported by CPD also showed vehicle-related arrests — which includes possession of a stolen vehicle and vehicular carjacking — rose almost 19% throughout 2023. Carjackings in 2023 were down by 20%, CPD said, with 1,307 reported in 2023, compared to 1,649 in 2022.

Shooting incidents dropped across the city in 2023, with the number of gunshot victims down nearly 18%, according to CPD.

Murders also dropped citywide. A total of 671 people were shot and killed in Chicago throughout 2023 compared to 709 people a year prior, marking a more than 12% decrease.

“In a city as big as Chicago, 12% is a lot of people,” said Roseanna Ander with the University of Chicago Crime Lab. “That means families that are not grieving the loss of a loved one and the huge ripple effect that those homicides have. So I think it is a place to really celebrate, but not lose sight of the work still ahead.”

The University of Chicago Crime Lab last week released its annual crime report, which found Black Chicagoans are 20 times more likely to become victims of crime than white Chicagoans.

“That gap has gotten smaller but it is still shockingly large,” Ander said. “It shows progress is possible, but we still have a ways to go.”

According to CPD, a comprehensive analysis with finalized numbers on crime in Chicago in 2023 was expected to be released Tuesday. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Family demands answers after Lyft driver shot and killed one day after Christmas https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/family-demands-answers-after-lyft-driver-shot-and-killed-one-day-after-christmas/3313995/ 3313995 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2023/12/rideshare-driver-shot-and-killed.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Grieving loved ones are desperately seeking answers about what led up to the death of a Chicago Lyft driver, who was shot and killed Tuesday night.

Adriana Arocha Duque lost her life just one day after celebrating Christmas with her family.

“I didn’t imagine it, so it’s something so horrible that I can’t think about it clearly,” said her nephew, Jose Chacon.

In an interview with NBC Chicago and Telemundo Chicago, Chacon said their family is now coping with the loss of someone he described as a beautiful person inside and out.

“She was special, [a] strong, working woman, very loving, she had many friends,” he said.

Family members said she was driving for Lyft at around 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday night and was dropping off two passengers in the Austin neighborhood when something happened. As of late Friday, it’s still unclear what exactly transpired.

According to Chicago police, they responded to the 4800 block of West Thomas, where a car had struck two parked vehicles. Officers found a woman, later identified as Arocha Duque, sitting in the driver’s seat. She had been shot in the head and was pronounced dead on the scene, authorities said.

“Justice needs to be done because we understand that this is not the last person that has experienced this in the same area this month,” said the victim’s brother-in-law, Jhonny Chacon.

According to a community alert issued by police on Friday, at least seven rideshare drivers were robbed in December. In several incidents, the victims were hit in the head with a gun. It remains unclear if the incidents are connected or if the same suspects are responsible for Arocha Duque’s death.

“This time it happened to her, tomorrow, it could happen to someone else… No we don’t want it to happen to anyone,” said her nephew.

Lyft issued a statement, saying, “Our hearts are with Ms. Arocha-Duque’s loved ones as they confront this unspeakable tragedy. We have reached out to her family to offer our support and are in contact with law enforcement to assist with their investigation.”

Arocha Duque, who was 34 years old, was originally from Venezuela and immigrated to the states seeking asylum, her nephew said. She cared for her dog Hunter, and was driving for Lyft to make extra money.

“We want justice and somehow the applications have to take action,” he said, referring to rideshare companies.

A witness told police they saw a man and woman running away from the vehicle. Family said they were caught on surveillance video, but so far no suspect descriptions have been released.

Area Four detectives were investigating late Friday.

Surveillance video shows suspects removing massive concrete barrier before West Loop ‘crash-and-grab' https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/surveillance-video-shows-suspects-removing-massive-concrete-barrier-before-west-loop-crash-and-grab/3301334/ 3301334 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2023/12/conceret-barrier.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Shocking security footage captured the moment several individuals removed a giant concrete barrier and rammed a Jeep into the store front of a high-end clothing shop in the West Loop early Tuesday morning as part of a “crash-and-grab” burglary.

According to police, the incident occurred at 3:11 a.m. in the 100 block of North Aberdeen, when the driver of a Jeep with several passengers inside struck the security gate and front door at the clothing shop SVRN.

The individuals took an unknown amount of merchandise and then fled the scene in several vehicles, police said.

Surveillance video from outside the shop shows several cars stopped in front of the shop before the burglary, with at least three large concrete anchors in front of the entrance.

At one point in the footage, an individual can be seen working to tie what appears to be a wire from one of the barriers barrier to an SUV in the middle of the street. The driver of the SUV can then be seen pulling the heavy concrete barrier off the sidewalk by slamming on the gas.

At another point in the video, one individual works to direct another car, a Jeep, to drive onto the sidewalk and up to the store front. The individual continues to stand close to the Jeep as it rams multiple times through the front entrance.

Surveillance video from inside the store shows the car breaking through the glass, with individuals running inside and grabbing merchandise. The individuals can then be seen fleeing the scene in multiple vehicles, with the Jeep still smashed through the front entrance.

SVRN owners David and Robert Kim told NBC Chicago the break-in at their store is the third in three weeks.

“We’ve done everything we could,” David said. “We put barriers up, gates. Hiding our inventory in our stock room. They are still relentless enough, and no one is doing anything to stop these across the city.”

David added that the burglary at SVRN — the Kim family’s small business — is at least the seventh or eight break-in in the past two years.

“All this will be coming out of our pocket,” David said.

The burglary is similar to other recent “crash-and-grabs” across Chicago, including one last month where suspects smashed into a River North store in an attempt to take an ATM machine.

In October, shocking surveillance video showed a stolen SUV crashing into a sneaker store in the Tri-Taylor neighborhood, with several suspects running into the store and grabbing merchandise before fleeing the scene.

“I love this city,” David said. “I have a lot of pride for this city. But I think everyone in power needs to do a better job and look out for its community. This is pretty sad.”

According to police, no one was in custody, and detectives were investigating.

The individuals took an unknown amount of merchandise and then fled the scene in several vehicles, police said.

Store owners David and Robert Kim told NBC Chicago the break-in at their store is the third in three weeks.

Photos and video from the scene show a Jeep smashed through the front entrance, with shattered glass and a mangled storefront.

In two of the incidents, the suspects were seen exiting and entering a blue sedan, police said. In four others, witnesses reported suspects fleeing the scene in a black car.

Although the incidents share similarities, authorities have not confirmed whether the robberies, which took place over the span of two hours, were connected.

Here’s what we know about each one:

At approximately 9:36 p.m. in the 700 block of W 15th St., in the East Pilsen neighborhood, police said two adult males were walking on the street when they were approached by a blue Honda sedan. Two unknown males exited the sedan with handguns, approached the victims and demanded personal property, officials said.

The victims complied and no one was inured, police said.

Approximately 25 minutes later, at 9:55 p.m., in the 1400 block of W. Lexington St. in Little Italy, three adult females were standing outside on the sidewalk when an unknown male with a handgun approached and demanded their personal property, according to police. The victims complied, and the man fled the scene in a blue sedan, police said.

Shortly after that, at approximately 10:19 p.m., a male, 33 was exiting his vehicle at 3200 N. LeClair Ave. in Portage Park when he was approached by a black Nissan, police said. Four unknown males armed with handguns and a rifle exited the vehicle and demanded the victim’s personal property, police said. The victim complied and the suspects re-entered the vehicle and fled the scene, according to officials.

Sources tell NBC Chicago that the victim in that incident was an off-duty police officer.

At 10:55 p.m., in the 3800 block of S. Wallace St. in Bridgeport, a man, 50, was approached by a two males armed with handguns that had exited a black sedan. The suspects demanded the man’s personal property and the victim complied, police said.

Approximately 30 minutes later, at 11:30 p.m., an adult male was driving westbound on 83rd Street in the Ashburn neighborhood when a black Nissan pulled up alongside him, police said.

According to authorities, four armed men got out of the vehicle and demanded the victim’s belongings. The victim complied, and no injuries were reported, police said.

Shortly after midnight, police reported that another similar armed robbery took place in the 8000 block of South Cottage. According to officials, a 52-year-old man was walking to his vehicle when a black Nissan sedan approached and three armed males exited the car.

The suspects demanded the man’s personal property and he complied. The suspects then fled the scene in the same vehicle, police said.

Saturday, Chicago police issued a community alert warning residents that a group of armed men traveling in a black Nissan Altima were responsible for at least 10 robberies.

In those instances, two of the victims were struck by the suspects, and one victim was shot.

“Be aware of your surroundings and unfamiliar or suspicious people in your area,” the alert said. “Walk with groups of individuals and do not carry large sums of money. Do not try to rationalize or confront offenders, it could lead to possible injury.”

SUV crashes into Round Two Chicago in Wicker Park: CPD https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/suv-crashes-into-round-two-chicago-in-wicker-park-cpd/3264844/ 3264844 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2023/10/Round-two-car-chicago.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Chicago police are investigating after someone crashed an SUV into a Wicker Park business early Tuesday.

The incident, part of a string of similar events referred to as “crash and grabs,” occurred at approximately 4:27 a.m. in the 1500 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, at the Round Two Chicago store in Wicker Park, police said.

According to authorities, a driver crashed an SUV into the retail business. Those inside the vehicle were not able to make entry inside, and no proceeds were taken, police said.

The suspect or suspects then fled in an unknown direction, leaving the SUV on the scene.

No injuries were reported. Police did not confirm how many suspects were involved.

The incident bears resemblance to several recent “crash and grabs,” where police say burglars use a stolen vehicle as a battering ram to initiate a crime. Last week, Flee Club, a shoe store in the in the Tri-Taylor neighborhood, was the latest retail victim of such an instance, wherein a group of suspects used a stolen vehicle to break through the reinforced storefront and make off with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise.

Police did not confirm whether the SUV used in Tuesday’s incident was stolen.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Woman, 18, in custody in fatal Loop stabbing of 16-year-old girl https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/woman-18-in-custody-in-fatal-loop-stabbing-of-16-year-old-girl/3244231/ 3244231 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2023/10/crime.webp?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all An 18-year-old woman has been been taken into Chicago police custody in connection with the stabbing death of a 16-year-old girl in the Loop after officials were contacted by a pastor of a West Side church who told them the suspect wanted to turn herself in, according to a police report.

The woman remained in custody as of Thursday afternoon. Earlier, Chicago police announced charges in the case but have since said that was done in error.

A spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s attorneys office said police had not submitted a case to the office for charging consideration as of Thursday afternoon.

Just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, police met with the pastor and the woman outside a West Side church, and she was placed into custody without incident, police said.

Officers responding to a disturbance at a Loop Taco Bell about 11:20 p.m. Tuesday were flagged down by someone who described a stabbing nearby in the first block of West Van Buren Street. There, they found Heaven Taylor lying in the street, suffering from stab wounds to her chest. Officers applied a “chest seal.”

Several witnesses were still on the scene where a large group had been fighting. At least one person identified the suspect by name and told police Taylor had been in an argument with her when the suspect took out a knife and stabbed Taylor twice in the chest before fleeing.

A man who worked at the same church as the pastor and helped facilitate the woman’s arrest told the Sun-Times she came to them after the incident, scared and looking for help.

“She was being attacked, and in all the videos that you see she was being attacked,” he said. “People were trying to portray it as if she was an aggressor, and she wasn’t. She was standing there until they came and attacked her, and it escalated.”

Police have not released any videos in connection to the case.

He said there had been previous altercations with this group of girls, and that the arrested woman was acting in self-defense.

After speaking with the woman and her mother, the man and fellow church leaders advised her to go to police and called in the Harrison Police District’s faith adviser. The church worker said he was confident police would be able to see from video footage that the suspect had been attacked.

Taylor, who was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, was pronounced dead early Wednesday.

Taylor’s mom, Chalesia Clayton, told the Sun-Times Wednesday that her daughter had just started her junior year at UCAN Academy on the South Side.

She was “a lovable person” and had a 2-year-old son, whom Clayton said she will now raise.

“I just want her remembered as a good momma and a good auntie and a good daughter,” Clayton said. “This right here just hurts.”

UCAN released a statement Wednesday sending condolences to “Heaven’s family and her beloved son.”

Taylor was the second child in less than a year that Clayton lost to violence in Chicago.

“I just buried my oldest son last year — her older brother — and now I’ve got to bury my daughter this year,” Clayton told the Sun–Times. “There’s just too much violence out here.”

17-year-old in medically-induced coma after West Town hit-and-run, family says https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/17-year-old-in-medically-induced-coma-after-west-town-hit-and-run-family-says/3203947/ 3203947 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2023/08/hit-and-run-west-town.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A 17-year-old girl is in a medically-induced coma, her family said, after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood.

Police said the teen, identified as Nakari Campbell, was crossing the street just before 10:30 p.m. Friday at Ashland and Division when a bright red 2008 Mercedes Benz hit her and fled at a high speed down Division.

The teen was hospitalized at John H. Stroger Jr. Medical Center of Cook County in critical condition. She had broken bones and head trauma, her family said.

But despite having a photo of the vehicle involved and the license plate number, no arrest has been made in the case, police said, adding that it remains an “ongoing investigation.”

Campbell’s family pleaded with the person responsible to turn themselves in and for police to solve the crime.

“What we are asking you all to do is: one, we need to put the pressure on the police department because they could track that plate to every single plate reader and red light camera in the city to find out where that car went,” said the family’s attorney Cierra Norris.

“Who was in your car? Just tell the truth. Man up, just tell the truth. Just simple as that,” said community activist Andrew Holmes.

The Illinois license plate of the vehicle involved was DC60012.

Police said the vehicle was a Mercedes Benz C35 with dark-colored rims, a sunroof and tinted windows.

Authorities said damage is expected at or near the grille portion of the vehicle.

Anyone who might have information on the case is being asked to call the Major Accident Investigation unit at (312) 745 – 4521 or anonymous tips can be submitted via cpdtip.com.

2 $50,000 rewards offered after 3 mail carriers robbed at gunpoint in 2 days https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/2-50000-rewards-offered-after-3-mail-carriers-robbed-at-gunpoint-in-2-days/3200074/ 3200074 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2023/08/GettyImages-168420237.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 The United States Postal Inspection Service is offering two $50,000 rewards after at three mail carriers in and around Chicago were held at gunpoint over the span of just two days.

The first incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 3200 block of North Kildare, when a 52-year-old mail-carrier was shot during an attempted robbery, according to police.

According to officials, two people approached the carrier, and one of them pulled out a gun and fired, striking the carrier in the leg. He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Just fifteen minutes later, around 3:45 p.m., another carrier was robbed at gunpoint in the 1800 block of North Sawyer in Logan Square. The postal service said the two robberies may be related and released a description of one of the suspects and the car used.

The car was described as a stolen white Kia sedan with the Illinois license plate BF73931. One suspect was described as wearing a light gray hooded sweatshirt, gray pants with “Reebok” wrapped around the left pant leg, Jordan sneakers with a blue crown emblem and blue stripes, and a backwards blue cap with stickers on the cap’s orange bill.

One day later, a mail carrier was robbed in Berwyn, in the 1400 block of Homes Avenue.

Two suspects, one armed with a handgun, robbed a letter-carrier and stole their bag, according to officials.

The suspects fled the scene in a silver Toyota Highlander with Illinois license plate CS86136, according to officials. The vehicle had previously been reported stolen from Chicago.

The suspects are still at-large, and the letter-carrier was unharmed in the incident, officials said.

$50,000 rewards have been offered in connection with both Tuesdays and Wednesdays cases, the United States Postal Service said. Anyone with information can call the postal service at (877) 876-2455.

A report from the Chicago Sun Time said robberies of mail carriers have tripled in the last three years.

Elise Foster, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers branch in Chicago, said the U.S. Postal Service hasn’t done enough to address it.

Criminals target letter carriers for their master keys that unlock mailboxes throughout a ZIP code. With those keys, they can steal mail, allowing them to wash and rewrite checks, or sell the keys to other criminals.

In June, a postal worker was robbed at gunpoint while delivering mail in the Beverly neighborhood.

On Monday, thieves used a saw to cut open a public mailbox outside a post office in south suburban Orland Park. Police urged anyone who used the mailbox at 9500 West 144th Place to monitor their accounts for unusual activity.

Alleged driver in hit-and-run outside White Sox game has never had driver's license, court documents show https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/alleged-driver-in-hit-and-run-outside-white-sox-game-has-never-had-drivers-license-court-documents-show/3167381/ 3167381 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2023/06/white-sox-guaranteed-rate.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A 20-year-old man who has never had a driver’s license was issued a $200,000 bond after he was the alleged driver in a hit-and-run crash that left four people injured just outside Guaranteed Rate Field on Tuesday, according to court documents.

According to court documents, Condelarious Garcia has never been issued a driver’s license and has cases with Cook County courts dating back to 2018.

Garcia faces four felony counts of aggravated reckless driving and one misdemeanor count of driving with a suspended license.

Twice before, Garcia had been apprehended for driving without a driver’s license.

Additionally, Garcia was issued three other citations for failure to reduce speed, operating an uninsured vehicle and expired registration.

Garcia’s mother, Catina Garcia, spoke with NBC Chicago and said that her son is not a monster.

“He did not do this intentionally, like wake up and say, ‘I’m doing this’,” Catina Garcia told NBC Chicago.

Garcia added that she wanted to “apologize to all the families of all the victims.”

According to Chicago police, the incident took place at 6:22 p.m. in the 300 block of West 35th Street, just as fans were entering the game.

Charles Janczy, one of the victims and a diehard White Sox fan, shared his frightening account in an exclusive interview with NBC Chicago.

“I crossed the street, and next thing I know, I get hit by a car,” Janczy told NBC Chicago.

Janczy said he never remembered seeing a car, and had flown into the vehicle’s sunroof headfirst before he could process what had happened.

“I could hear the occupants of the car talking amongst themselves a little bit about the cops all over them. One of them asked me a couple of times I think if I was alright,” Janczy said.

Illinois State Police eventually executed a PIT maneuver to halt the suspect’s vehicle.

Janczy, an Evanston native and White Sox season ticket holder, could be released from the hospital as early as tomorrow as he recovers from fractured ribs, bruising and swelling.

“I think in a way going through the sunroof thing might have actually been a blessing, because I might have gotten thrown off the car and hit my head,” Janczy told NBC Chicago.

Two other victims, a 51-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man, both of whom were hit by the vehicle, were taken to area hospitals in critical condition, police said.

One of those victims suffered a traumatic brain injury and has been unresponsive since the incident.

A 24-year-old man was also struck, and was transported in fair condition.

“If I could take the place of all of the victims, I would make this right so that the victims could live their lives with their families,” Catina Garcia told NBC Chicago.

According to officials, the driver fled the scene and crashed on the Dan Ryan Expressway near 45th Street. The male driver and three other males in the car, ranging in age from 20 to 25, were taken to a nearby hospital in fair condition, where they remain in police custody, Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief Fred Melean said during a press conference Tuesday.

“It’s highly unusual for how many Sox games have gone on that something like this has occurred,” Melean said, adding that the pedestrians who were struck were on their way to the game.

Melean also said during the press concurrence there was no reason to believe that the incident was targeted, and said police were investigating if the vehicle was stolen.

2 found guilty of killing retired Chicago firefighter during attempted carjacking https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/2-found-guilty-of-killing-retired-chicago-firefighter-during-attempted-carjacking/3166761/ 3166761 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2022/08/Generic-fire-truck-and-gear-a-fire-truck-is-parked-in-the-bay-with-all-of-the-fire-fighting-equipment-and-gear-rea-SBI-301040940.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A pair of gunmen have been found guilty in the slaying of a retired Chicago fire lieutenant during a carjacking attempt in the Morgan Park neighborhood.

Separate juries on Wednesday found Devin Barron and Jaylen Saulsberry guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting of retired-Lt. Dwain Williams, who Cook County prosecutors said was confronted at gunpoint by a carjacking crew in December 2020 as he left a gourmet popcorn shop.

The jury in Barron’s trial returned their verdict about five hours after deliberations began and immediately after the jury in Saulsberry’s trial retired to begin their own discussions.

It took less than two hours for the second panel to reach its decision.

Members of Williams’ family wore matching red outfits for the final day of the trial.

“He was a firefighter, so everything was red,” his daughters said as they recalled their father’s favorite color. “We started the trial wearing red and we ended in red.”

When their trials began last week, there were three defendants and three separate juries.

But in a surprise on Tuesday, the third co-defendant, Dwain Johnson, took the stand to testify against Barron and Saulsberry after Johnson accepted a plea offer from the state’s attorney’s office mid-trial that saw his murder charge reduced.

Johnson, 20, pleaded guilty to a count of aggravated battery with a firearm, according to court records. Prosecutors said they would seek the maximum 30-year sentence against him.

A fourth defendant, a teenage boy who was 15 at the time of Williams’ death, had his case adjudicated in juvenile court and also testified against Barron and Saulsberry. Prosecutors said he was back in school and had stayed out of trouble.

All four were part of a carjacking crew that targeted Williams’ Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk SUV after they spotted it while driving.

With the 15-year-old behind the wheel of a stolen Ford Fusion sedan, the crew trailed Williams until he parked outside Let’s Get Poppin’ at 11758 S. Western Ave. and then waited for Williams to return.

Barron and Saulsberry got out of the stolen Ford with guns drawn and confronted Williams as he carried a package of popcorn to his Jeep.

Williams, a concealed-carry holder, drew his own gun and exchanged fire with the crew before they fled. Williams was shot in the abdomen and died a short time later.

Investigators were able to track the group using cellphone data and surveillance footage.

DNA evidence implicating Saulsberry was recovered from a shoe that one of the gunmen left behind as he fled, and a fingerprint on a granola bar found in the back seat of the Ford when it was recovered in Tinley Park matched Barron’s, prosecutors said.

Attorneys for both defendants spent much of their closing arguments Wednesday assailing the integrity and reliability of testimony by the teenager and Johnson.

“This was not some wide-eyed kid,” Barron’s attorney, David Gaeger, said to jurors about the 15-year-old, but a “sophisticated” criminal. During a police interrogation, Gaeger said the teen’s mother pressured her son into telling the detectives information they wanted to hear to “save himself.”

Saulsberry’s attorney, David Sotomayor, called the teenager a “druggie” who testified he took the drug ecstasy regularly.

Gaeger said Johnson’s testimony lacked a shred of credibility, arguing prosecutors “went to the person they had the strongest case against and offered him a deal” to testify against the others.

“His motive was to get the deal and get out of here as quick as he can,” Sotomayor agreed.

Prosecutors countered that both the teenager and Johnson had “done the right thing” in the end and that it took guts for them to take the stand.

“It doesn’t make them snitches; it makes them men,” an assistant state’s attorney said.

Williams’ family said they were consulted by the state’s attorney’s office on the decision to offer a plea deal mid-trial to Johnson, and said they believed it helped secure the additional two guilty verdicts and bring them justice.

“We wanted the shooters,” daughter Tarmarcea Humphrey said.

She said the family took no consolation in the fact that all three young men would spend decades in prison, saying they were the type of at-risk youth that their father had gone out of his way to coach and mentor.

They said they also hoped Williams would be remembered for his life of service, particularly for his work as a city firefighter who would “rush into a burning building to save anyone.”

“We don’t want the last 30 minutes of his life to define him,” his daughter Kenya Heste

Man accused of striking, injuring 4 in hit-and-run near Guaranteed Rate Field to appear in court https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/man-accused-of-striking-injuring-4-in-hit-and-run-near-guaranteed-rate-field-to-appear-in-court-thursday/3166688/ 3166688 post https://media.nbcchicago.com/2023/06/white-sox-guaranteed-rate.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The man accused of striking and seriously injuring at least four people with a car in front of Guaranteed Rate Field Tuesday just before the White Sox game is expected to appear in bond court at 12 p.m. Thursday.

Condelarious Garcia, 20, of Chicago, has been charged with with four felony counts of aggravated reckless driving and one misdemeanor count of driving with a suspended license, Chicago police said. Garcia was also issued three citations for failure to reduce speed, operating an uninsured vehicle and expired registration.

According to Chicago police, the incident took place at 6:22 p.m. in the 300 block of West 35th Street, as fans were entering the game.

Officials say Garcia, who was behind the wheel of a silver sedan and heading eastbound on 35th Street, struck four pedestrians before fleeing the scene.

One of those hit was die-hard White Sox fan Charles Janczy, 64. Janczy was flung over the car and sent through the vehicle’s sunroof as it fled onto the Dan Ryan Expressway, police said.

“I crossed the street, and next thing I know, I get hit by a car,” Janczy told NBC Chicago, from his hospital bed.

Officials say Janczy, an Evanston native and White Sox season ticket holder, could be released from the hospital as early as Thursday as he recovers from fractured ribs, bruising and swelling.

“I think in a way going through the sunroof thing might have actually been a blessing, because I might have gotten thrown off the car and hit my head,” Janczy said.

Two other victims, a 51-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man, both of whom were hit by the vehicle, were taken to area hospitals in critical condition, police said.

A 24-year-old man was also struck, and was transported in fair condition.

After fleeing the scene, Garcia eventually crashed the vehicle on the Dan Ryan Expressway near 45th Street. Three other males in the car, ranging in age from 20 to 25, were taken to a nearby hospital in fair condition, where they remain in police custody, Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief Fred Melean said during a press conference Tuesday.
